Day 3 Auckland to Rotorua

Updated: Mar 3

We're still doing shockingly well with jetlag, and we had another day of sun and warm weather so all good from the bottom of the world! We drove south from Auckland today across super interesting scenery that had a tropical feel but then transitioned into lots of farmland and some views that looked almost like England (says Steve). We stopped on the way at the Waitomo caves, famous for their glowworms. The caves themselves were very cool (though taking pics was banned as it messes with the glowworms apparently). So full disclosure our pics of the caves and glow worms are mostly sourced from the web. The caves are very large and filled with stalagmites and stalactites. They looked like something out of Indiana Jones and I thought it would be a cool location for a movie. The glowworms themselves are slightly creepy little caterpillars that live on the cave roof and catch bugs on a poison coated silk that dangles down from the 'worm'. Most interestingly they emit a bioluminescence to attract their mates as well as their prey! We have to say that seeing a cave filled with thousands of them was illuminating (sorry)!

We then continued down to Rotorua (New Zealand's answer to Yellowstone) where we'll visit some hot springs tomorrow. We witnessed a collection of weird and hard to pronounce names and some cool signage. "Pony Poo for $1" (volume of poo undisclosed) being my fav although we were going too fast to capture a picture of that one. Here are a couple of others tho:

See you from the hot springs tomorrow!

Love the sound of this glowworm cave! And I wonder how much pony poo you can get for a buck! I can imagine dad laughing at that sign

Waiheke Island, the Island of Wine! Lonely Planet rated the island the fifth best region in the world to visit in 2016. What a beginning to your two months away. Beautiful!
